This is the kind of stuff that drives taxpayers crazy.
The average taxpayer doesn’t care which level of government has responsibility for a particular issue. They just want things fixed.
When they’re sick, they go to a hospital. They don’t think, “Hey, this operating room is run by the Fraser Health Authority, a provincial agency, with money funneled from the federal government through the provincial Ministry of Health.” They just want to get better.
When their car is jarred by a pothole, they don’t ponder whether the road is a provincial, TransLink, municipal, or private responsibility. They just want the hole filled.
And when they see a train bridge rusting out, they don’t ponder the difference between Transport Canada and the Ministry of Transportation. They don’t care – just make sure the bridge is safe.
Government gets this - in theory. That's why we have intergovernmental ministries and whole bureaucracies dedicated to communicating with one another. But cases like this show it’s still broken.
Fix the bridge.
